5 Signs Your Fibroid Symptoms Are More Than ‘Just Your Period
Heavy periods. Cramping. Bloating that makes your jeans fit differently by week three of your cycle. For a lot of women, these symptoms get written off as “just how my body is” — something to push through, not something to treat. But if any of this sounds familiar, it might not be your period doing this. It might be uterine fibroids.
Fibroids are noncancerous growths in or around the uterus, and they’re incredibly common — by age 50, the majority of women will have had at least one. The tricky part is that fibroid symptoms often masquerade as “normal” period problems, which means many women live with them far longer than they need to. Here are five signs worth paying attention to.
1. Your Periods Are Heavier Than They Used to Be
A period that soaks through a pad or tampon in an hour, requires doubling up on protection, or includes large blood clots isn’t just “a heavy flow” — it’s one of the most common fibroid symptoms there is. If you’ve noticed your cycle getting progressively heavier over the years, that shift is worth mentioning to your doctor.
2. You’re Planning Your Life Around Your Cycle
If you find yourself avoiding white pants, skipping workouts, rescheduling trips, or mentally mapping out bathroom access before you leave the house during your period, that’s not just inconvenience — that’s your body telling you something is disrupting your normal function.
3. You Feel Pelvic Pressure or Bloating That Doesn’t Go Away
Fibroids can create a persistent feeling of fullness or pressure in the lower abdomen, sometimes described as looking or feeling “pregnant” even when you’re not near your period. This is different from typical PMS bloating, which usually comes and goes with your cycle.
4. You’re Making More Bathroom Trips Than Usual
Depending on their size and location, fibroids can press on the bladder or bowel, leading to more frequent urination or a feeling of incomplete emptying. If this is a newer pattern for you, it’s a sign worth bringing up at your next appointment.
5. You’re Exhausted — and Bloodwork Shows Why
Heavy, prolonged bleeding from fibroids can lead to iron-deficiency anemia, leaving many women feeling persistently fatigued, dizzy, or short of breath. If you’ve been told your iron is low and you also deal with heavy periods, the two may well be connected.

You Don’t Have to Just Live With It
Here’s the good news: fibroid symptoms are treatable, and treatment doesn’t have to mean major surgery. Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE) is a minimally invasive, outpatient procedure that cuts off blood flow to fibroids, causing them to shrink and symptoms to resolve — all without removing the uterus, without a lengthy hospital stay, and with most women back to normal activities within one to two weeks.
Too many women wait years thinking their symptoms are just “how periods are.” They’re not. If any of the signs above sound familiar, it’s worth a conversation.
Dr. Travis Van Meter and the team at MTVIR in Dallas specialize in helping women get answers — and relief — through UFE. Schedule a consultation to find out if it’s the right next step for you.
